Gettysburg is widely known as a hot spot for history buffs, but you don’t need to have paid attention in high school to appreciate all that Gettysburg has to offer. Modern times have seen Gettysburg switch focus from Lincoln to libations. Here are 5 spots you can visit to experience Gettysburg’s burgeoning craft beer, wine, and cocktail scene.

Drinking Like Lincoln; 5 spots to experience Gettysburg's Craft Beer, Wine, and Spirits

1- Battlefield Brew Works / Spirits of Gettysburg Distillery

Pick your poison! This is your one stop shop for beer and harder booze. As the name would suggest, Battlefield Brew Works is your go-to spot to sample house-made craft beer in Gettysburg. Battlefield Brew Works strives to keep their 9 year round beers on tap as well as a few seasonal surprises. If beer is not your beverage of choice, fear not. The Spirits of Gettysburg Distillery offers vodka, whiskey, and rum and is the only licensed distillery in Gettysburg since the prohibition! Head in to the bar for a liquor tasting or try a perfectly crafted cocktails featuring their spirits. Getting hungry? Battlefield Brew Works and Spirits of Gettysburg Distillery also offer a full menu featuring their house specialty, wild game sausages.

2- Appalachian Brewing Company

Can’t get enough of the suds? Head to one of Appalachian Brewing Company’s seven locations in the greater Gettysburg area. There’s even a location adjacent to the Gettysburg Battlefield that offers daily tours and a walk up beer window! Appalachian Brewing Company has 8 flagship beers on tap as well as a new seasonal beer released on the first Friday of every month. If you’re traveling with little ones or just need a break from the sauce, Appalachian Brewing Company also makes their own craft sodas. Stop in on the weekends for some live music and delicious food to accompany your libation of choice.

3- Mason Dixon Distillery

This young distillery currently has vodka and rum on offer, but there’s some much anticipated whiskey in the works. Tours of the facility are offered daily and of course include tastings. Pick up a bottle to take home or linger into the evening and enjoy a craft cocktail (or four) and some small plates. Their food menu changes seasonally, so you’ll want to plan a few trips 😉

4- Adams County Winery

While the Adams County Winery vineyard is located in nearby Orrtanna, PA, the Wine Shop at 25c offers tastings of the Adams County Wines in Gettysburg. The shop offers daily tastings as well as the opportunity to bring some snacks and sit down with your favorite bottle. The Adams County Winery prides themselves on creating a wine for every palate. They offer everything from sweet to dry and even some fruit wines with names like “Rebel Red” and “Yankee Blue” (made from blueberries). It’s easy to see why they are consistently voted the “best winery in Gettysburg.”

5- Reid’s Orchard and Winery

In addition to beer, wine, and liquor, Gettysburg and the surrounding area is known for it’s fruit production. In fact, Gettysburg is the largest producer of apples in Pennsylvania and the fourth largest in the USA. Reid’s Orchard and Winery has been able to incorporate both Gettysburg’s love of apples and booze into one glorious destination. Reid’s offers a selections of wines (both grape and other fruit varieties) and hard apple ciders. Much like the Adams County Winery, the wine-making process is done in Orrtanna, but the Reid’s Orchard and Winery Cider House Cafe in Gettysburg offers daily tastings, with souvenir glass if you’re so inclined.

As you can see, Civil War soldiers aren’t the only spirits you’ll encounter in Gettysburg (I had to do it!). This historic town has something for everyone, no matter what kind of booze (boos) you prefer.

  2. I’ve been wanting to go to Gettysburg for quite some time, and this only adds more fuel to that desire. Vodka and whiskey are my poisons of choice lately, so both distilleries would be right up my alley. Sounds like there would be a lot to drink and explore!
