“Why Loch Ness?”<\/a> is a question I got from many Scots I spoke with before my trip.\u00a0 The answer was a resounding, “Oh that’s right, you’re American.”\u00a0 Of course it should have been, “monsters, duh!”<\/p>\n The possibility of monsters is what attracted me to Loch Ness in the first place, but after hearing time and time again, “why?” “It’s just a loch.” and “There are much prettier lochs to visit in Scotland.” I lowered my expectations a bit.<\/p>\n The drive from the Glasgow airport to the Highlands<\/a> was worth the trip in itself.\u00a0 Despite the gloomy weather, the view from the car was staggering!<\/p>\n <\/a><\/p>\n <\/a><\/p>\n <\/a><\/p>\n <\/a><\/p>\n <\/a><\/p>\n The route north is incredibly beautiful.\u00a0 It was hard to believe that Loch Ness would be underwhelming… and it wasn’t!\u00a0 You guys are all wrong.<\/p>\n How is this, “just a loch”?<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/a><\/p>\n <\/a><\/p>\n <\/a><\/p>\n The mountains, the Urquhart Castle ruins, the calm still water (when monsters aren’t disrupting it), this is literally one of prettiest places I’ve ever been.\u00a0 I guess it speaks to the beauty of Scotland that it’s people are so blase about this view.<\/p>\n There are plenty of non-monster related reasons to visit this area too.\u00a0 Visit Inverness Loch Ness<\/a> has some great ideas, but here are a few reasons I’d recommend going.<\/p>\n The townspeople are crazy polite<\/strong>,<\/p>\n right down to their street signs.<\/p>\n <\/a><\/p>\n They capitalize on their monster fame in the most charming way possible!<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/a><\/p>\n That’s right, monsters and beer, the two greatest things there are in this world, together.<\/p>\n <\/a><\/p>\n The beers even have adorable names like “hoppyNESS”, and “darkNESS”<\/p>\n They also have an excellent merchandising team that’s not afraid to give the people what they want.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/a><\/p>\n They have a castle.<\/strong><\/p>\n A REAL LIFE CASTLE!\u00a0 I know it’s not a big deal in the U.K., they’re lousy with castles, but I don’t care how much I travel it’s still impressive to this American.<\/p>\n <\/a><\/p>\n <\/a><\/p>\n This was the day I realized that I dress like a cartoon Beatle when I get cold.\u00a0 I’m from Florida, I still haven’t figured out weather.<\/p>\n I’m sure all of the lochs in Scotland are spectacular, but I’m glad I wasn’t talked out of this one.\u00a0 I got to do something that would really impress 6th grade me (and current me), and it turned out to be one of the most beautiful and pleasant places I’ve ever been.<\/p>\n Seriously Scotland, you’re underselling it!<\/p>\n I was helped in the planning of this trip by Colin Mairs of Excursion Scotland.\u00a0 As well as guided tours in 4 languages, Excursion Scotland offers a travel consulting service to help you plan your perfect self-guided tour of Scotland.\u00a0 Learn more at www.ExcursionScotland.com<\/a> and on Facebook at www.facebook.com\/ExcursionScotland<\/a> .<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" “Why Loch Ness?” is a question I got from many Scots I spoke with before my trip.\u00a0 The answer was a resounding, “Oh that’s right, you’re American.”\u00a0 Of course it should have been, “monsters, duh!” The possibility of monsters is what attracted me to Loch Ness in the first place, but after hearing time and […]<\/p>\n
